The sweetness of the boiled potato and onion offsets a sharp and intense taste of the surströmming perfectly!

The sweetness of the boiled potato and the crisp freshness of the onion create the perfect balance to complement the sharp, salty, and tangy taste of surströmming. This combination has been cherished for generations in Sweden, as it tempers the boldness of the fish while adding layers of flavor and texture.

To make your surströmming experience even more enjoyable, try pairing it with soft bread, such as tunnbröd (thin flatbread). This allows you to create a convenient roll, making it easier to handle and eat—especially if you have a beer in the other hand to complete the authentic Swedish surströmming experience! The bread wraps up all the ingredients, from the salty fish to the sweet potatoes and crunchy onions, creating a perfect bite every time.
